..Formed in
the early part of the 1900's to manufacture ash blocks from the clinker
produced in the boiler houses at the famous Lister's Mill in Manningham,
Bradford.
The business expanded and continued into the production of concrete products before setting up as a small builder's merchant. The business was incorporated in 1963 under the name of Manningham Concrete Ltd. In 1964 two brothers, Ronnie and George Tomlinson, who ran a successful joinery and building contractors, had the opportunity to buy Manningham Concrete Ltd. They did so with a partner who was experienced in the production of concrete products but the partnership did not last for long before the third party was bought out. In the following years the business expanded and the major growth was seen in the builders merchant side of the business diminished the importance of the concrete and ash products production which was closed in 1980. By 1970 the company had outgrown the original site in Manningham, so a virgin Greenfield site was bought on Cemetery Road, Bradford. Thus began the development of one of Bradford's largest independent builder's merchants. Over the following years buildings and departments were added offering the trade and DIY enthusiast a full product range from the smallest requirement to their largest. As the company management and many of the staff came from a building background, advise on projects or problems was (and still is) available from staff. The friendly nature of the family run business quickly confirmed its position in the market. By 1980 the site at Scotchman Road had become redundant but the demand in the timber- market presented opportunities in different areas to those covered at Manningham Concrete and so, Manningham Timber & Plywood was formed. Ronnie died in 1992 and George retired in 1998 and the running of Manningham Concrete was taken over by Ronnie's two sons, Andrew and Alan. As the new millennium approached it was decided by the Directors that the profits from earlier years should be invested in the business and the staff to provide the both services and products being requested by customers in an ever-changing world. Many new products and services are planned for the future and we look forward to our continued relationships with existing customers and hope to provide the same service for many new customers in the future. It is with great enthusiasm that we look forward to the business development of Manningham Concrete Ltd.. |
